LONDON, U.K. – 5th August, 2014 – Cat phones announced today its sponsorship of a Class 40 yacht, branded the Cat Phones Class 40. The Cat phones boat will be taking part in the toughest and most exciting races in the Class 40 race circuit including the non-stop Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland endurance race followed by the single-handed Route du Rhum, the 3,500 mile transatlantic race from St. Malo, France to Guadeloupe.

Skippered by Conrad Humphreys, the British triple round-the-world sailor and re-engineered by Mike Gascoyne – using his knowledge and expertise gained as Technical Director for the F1 Caterham Team – the Cat phones Class 40 is truly Built For It.

Debuted at Cowes Week, the Cat Phones Class 40 will nurture the very best in engineering and talent. The team will use F1 technology and performance sailing know-how to become a major force in competitive sailing, with the aspiration of setting new race records and finishing on the podium in every race it competes in.

All Cat equipment embodies the durable and reliable attributes of the Caterpillar brand and Cat phones are no exception, with the entire range of rugged mobiles certified to the highest industry standard for ruggedness, IP67, meaning they’re able to withstand a 1.8m drop onto concrete, be submerged in up to one metre of water for 30 minutes, and endure extreme temperatures, truly built for the task in hand.

“Sailing requires the mobile phone to be taken into an environment it’s not designed for, but our range of tough phones are waterproof, drop-proof and durable, built for the demands of ocean racing and rugged sports,” explained Stephanie Forrest, CMO of Bullitt, worldwide licensee of Cat phones and accessories. “This is a long term commitment for us, becoming part of a world-class sailing team with the opportunity to reach out globally to our target audience within the sailing and active lifestyle communities.”

For the first race which starts on August 10th, the Round Britain and Ireland Race, the Cat Phones Class 40 will be skippered by Humphreys, who will be joined by UK top Figaro sailor, Sam Matson, former Round Britain and Ireland Class 40 record holder, Tom Gall and boat captain, Hugh Fletcher. The team is targeting a Class win in the race and if conditions allow, the opportunity to claim the Class record which currently stands at 9 days, 13hrs, 57mins.

“We’re really thrilled to be part of the Class 40 race circuit with Cat Phones. The racing team we have on board is definitely Built for It and has the ability and passion needed for ocean racing. We’re looking forward to the challenge ahead and to setting new records,” said Conrad Humphreys.

“With the Cat Phones Class 40 we have a really exciting racing yacht that we have fine tuned to ensure we have the right boat to win,” commented Mike Gascoyne. “It’s vital that we have a boat that’s reliable and can withstand tough endurance races.”
